Marriage to an alcoholic frequently comes with the assumption (accusation?) that the sober partner is enabling. I never saw myself that way when I was married to an alcoholic. Enabling, in my mind, meant I was helping him stay drunk and I don’t think I did that. But there was an aspect that I now describe as addictive. The addiction was my focus on trying to force his sobriety. The way in which I saw whether he lived or died, as something I was responsible for. And that I could only see clearly after the marriage ended.

I spoke with a journalist for the Toronto Sun about my upcoming book, Becoming Unbreakable, and specifically that aspect of our complicated marriage.
